Prosperity

Original homesteaders and settlers usually started by building a small homesteading shack. Other buildings were then added which supported the farming operation such as the granary and barn. The last building to be constructed was a new or enlarged house.
The homesteader’s pride in an improved farm building, livestock, or new automobile combined well with the photographer’s need for natural light, producing what we call “prosperity photos.” These photos often show every member of the family holding horses, seated in an automobile, or with newly purchased bicycles.
